Gov. Schwarzenegger: ‘No one cares if you smoke a joint’

Last night on the “Tonight Show”, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger responded to host Jay Leno’s question about the failure of Proposition 19, a measure on the California ballot to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Schwarzenegger responded that the measure failed in part, because he had already decriminalized the use of less than 1 oz of pot, and also because, “No one cares if you smoke a joint.”

Clearly, Californians do care if their fellow citizens are lighting up – the measure to legalize pot-smoking statewide  failed by a margin of 54%-46%. Proposition 19 was one of the hottest topics of the 2010 Congressional midterm elections, as its passage would have made California the first state to allow recreational use of marijuana for its citizens, statewide.

There is nothing false with Arnold’s statement. Californians did not vote 54% against allowing someone to occasionally “smoke a joint.” They voted no against something much larger. His point about poor wording is very true. If you asked a no-user of marijuana “do you mind if someone enjoys a casual joint in their home once in a while,” most people would say no. However, if you asked the same person “do you mind if we legalize marijuana,” they are going to have a very different reaction.

It’s the same thing with casinos and table games. The majority of people will vote against them on moral principles, but if you then tell them it will lower their taxes and pay for schools, then the scale completely tips as we’ve seen in a few states already.
